About Wheatsheaf Group

Wheatsheaf Group is an international investor in food and agriculture businesses. Its involvement spans a sector where farms, processors and retailers depend on information moving between organisations. For this project, Wheatsheaf explored how digital technology could improve those connections, making information about activities on farms more useful to businesses further along the supply chain and creating opportunities to recover value lost during data handovers.

The Challenge

Wheatsheaf wanted to rapidly develop prototype applications that would help farmers capture and share reliable information about their operations. Relevant activities ranged from animal births and feeding to planting plans, medicine use and fertiliser application. The challenge was to make this information available to food processors and retailers in an audited, validated form. The business proposition was that better data sharing could reclaim around one-third of the value lost during handovers, requiring practical tools for farmers and connections across multiple supply chain participants.

Our Solution

One Beyond developed smartphone applications with farm dashboards and voice-activated controls, supported by a blockchain solution embedded into existing farm management apps. We connected the solution with a multi-party open marketplace and, further downstream, supermarket customer loyalty applications. Built using React Native, Node.js, AWS and Docker, the prototypes brought together mobile access and supply chain integration. Throughout development, our team worked closely with Wheatsheaf, questioning ideas and contributing practical suggestions to help turn its proposition into working software.
